Learn the ins and outs of RPG Maker VX Ace’s database, event structure, and mapping tools well enough to make a basic RPG.
Game making tools have exploded in recent years, allowing independent developers the freedom to create without having to reinvent the wheel for every game. Predating Unity, Construct, and all the rest is RPG Maker. Some version of the tool has been around since the late ‘80s, and in its most recent incarnation, RPG Maker has evolved to be a powerful editor.
It remains as one of the best programs for those just getting started with game design, as it requires no programming ability to get started. But since its integration with Ruby, it also now serves as a great tool for more experienced developers who want to prototype quickly, or easily achieve its distinctive aesthetic.
This hands-on class is designed to provide an introductory overview of RPG Maker VX Ace. Topics will include RPG Maker’s tile-based mapping tool, easily editable database of items and inventory, and the event system which drives game logic.
Students are encouraged to download the free trial of the software and bring their laptops to follow along and create the basic building blocks of an RPG during the course. At the end, the course will briefly cover how to customize the program beyond default settings, including importing custom art and music assets, and programming in Ruby.
