Class Description

Description

Food Writing is a comprehensive ten-week workshop presenting instructional lectures, practical writing assignments, and constructive feedback on student writing projects. The course accommodates beginners and those wishing to strengthen their foundational abilities and knowledge.

If you take genuine pleasure in eating, drinking, and culinary experiences, food writing will satisfy your appetites and interests. Consider writing a critical review of a newly opened restaurant, composing an article exploring the history and cultural significance of saffron, sharing a personal narrative about cooking alongside your grandmother, or developing a collection of traditional catfish recipes. Food writing allows you to celebrate the pleasures of cuisine without gaining weight.

Food writing demands both deep passion for food and the capacity to capture its sensory and cultural dimensions through language. This course surveys the complete landscape of food writing, including restaurant criticism, personal food memoir, meditative essays, journalism, cultural articles, digital blogs, and complete books. You will develop both craft skills and marketing strategies for your work.

Whether your focus is on the production of agricultural food, the preparation and cooking processes, or the experience of eating and dining, we will equip you with the knowledge and techniques to enhance your food writing with precision and artistry.

Important Course Information:

Gotham offers Food Writing exclusively at Level I. After initial completion, if you wish to develop additional food-related writing, you have available options:

  • Memoir I or Memoir II for personal food narratives and stories
  • Essay and Opinion I for critical food reviews and analytical essays
  • Feature Article writing for longer food journalism and reporting

This course establishes a comprehensive understanding of food writing fundamentals and supports the development of short pieces or book-length projects. Course components include:

  • Instructional lectures and core concepts
  • Practical writing assignments and creative exercises
  • Peer critique and feedback sessions (each student presents work twice)
